Bourbon Barrels for some local craft breweries

We have recently had the privilege of delivering some once used bourbon barrels to some local craft breweries in the Upper Highway area.

We are happy to have delivered barrels to the Stumpnose Brewery and also Nguni Brewing

Stumpnose Brewery & Taproom

Pictured here are the two barrels now at Stumpnose as well as some of their canned IPA beers 🍻

A bit about Bourbon Barrels

The bourbon barrels are excellent for adding that extra bit of flavour to the:

Many beers are aged in barrels which were previously used for maturing spiritsImperial stouts are often aged in bourbon barrels, which impart flavours of American oak (coconut, dill, sweet spices), accentuated by charring of the barrel interior.[25][26]Bourbon barrels are by far the most common oak barrels used by brewers in the United States. Each distillery uses its own blend of oak and its own level of charring, leading to distinct differences in the sorts of flavours that brewers can derive from the used barrels.[1][2]

The great thing about bourbon barrels is that bourbon is required to be aged in a new barrel, so when the barrel is used with beer it still has a lot of the flavours from the oak, charred areas and the bourbon.

The Bourbon barrels we are supplying to local breweries in the South Africa area are all once used and still wet. They also smell real good 😄

We still have some in stock if you are looking for a barrel or two.

Day 5, Photo Blog of aging a neutral spirit on WHISKY STIKs and  FLAVOUR STIKs

On Day 5 of wood aging with the Whisky Stiks, the change is gradual. On the nose the small bottle has a wonderful smoke aroma and good oak taste but not too strong with less sharpness of the alcohol, I will leave this another day or two.

The large bottle has wonderful aromas of smoked oak and hickory, taste is still quite sharp and overpowers the wood tastes for now. Will leave this another 5 days and taste again.

Day 4, Photo Blog of aging a neutral spirit on WHISKY STIKs and  FLAVOUR STIKs

Whiskey aging quietly at home, day 4 now and not much change from yesterday, small bottle looks to be a shade darker.

Oak has been used for centuries to age Whisky or Whiskey, with various nuances added by the cooper in toasting or charring the barrel to the distillers taste. The aging then takes years or decades. What we are trying to do here is hurry it along a bit. But aging is aging, once the desired colour and aroma is achieved it will still require a minimum of 3 months to a year to really show its potential. The small amount of spirit in the bottle has more wood contact than say in a 500 or so liter barrel and is able to pull out colour and some flavour a bit quicker.

In the short term a spirit aged on oak chips of WHISKY STIKs will make a great mixer in 3 weeks to a few months adding another level of aroma and taste to your favorite cocktail.
